Professor Dr. R. Michael Smith is an Associate Professor in early childhood and childhood education in the College of Education at Niagara University. For the last 18 years, he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Multicultural Education, Foundations of Education, Motivation and Classroom Management, Research and Statistics, and Special Needs.
Dr. Smith also supervises student teachers in elementary and secondary classrooms in Canada and the US.
During the past twelve summers, he has conducted study abroad programs and studied the education systems in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and China. During his 2007-08 sabbatical, Dr. Smith taught at Sanda University in Shanghai and trained student volunteers for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Shanghai World Expo 2010.
Dr. Smith’s undergraduate degree is in Sociology and Business from Brock University in Canada. He has two Master of Education degrees from Niagara University and a Ph.D. in Social Foundations and Multiculturalism from the University of Buffalo. He is also enrolled in the MBA and completing a masters in TESOL at Niagara University this year.
Dr. Smith has co-authored four books on cooperative learning and in addition to his journal article publications, he has presented at more than 50 national and international conferences. He also serves as the co-editor of JPACTE, the electronic journal for constructivist education and is a reviewer for numerous educational associations and international journals.
Dr. Smith was invited as a keynote speaker to deliver a speech on “Captivating Class with Constructivism: Practical Strategies for Pre-service and In-service Teachers” at the National and International Research Conference 2015 : NIRC 2015 organized on January 23, 2015 by Buriram Rajabhat University.
